Grand Area Mentoring

Description of Services

Grand Area Mentoring is a school-based mentoring program that matches responsible adult mentors with at-risk students. Pairs meet one-on-one to encourage youth success and bolster self-confidence. Their weekly sessions sometimes include board games, basketball, and computers. Other matches pursue crafts, reading, and talking about life. Mentors and students seek activities that are mutually enjoyable and enriching.

Grand Area Mentoring trains new volunteers in mentoring best practices and supports matches with regular staff contact. Thanks to its powerful corps of generous mentors, Grand Area Mentoring consistently outperforms goals set by experts in the field. 100% of Moab teachers surveyed feel that mentored youth seem to care more about their grades, like school more, and demonstrate improved social skills.

We do a lot with a little. Grand Area Mentoring is 35% more efficient than the average mentoring program nationwide. 95% of our mentees rate their relationships as “close” or “very close.” Nationally, school based matches last about six months; Grand Area Mentoring relationships last more than two years, an indicator of high quality mentoring.

At the end of the year, students say…
“My mentor makes me nicer to people because I’m a lot happier than I used to be.”
“Mentoring is my favorite thing.”
“I get to tell her stuff that I can’t tell other people because they won’t understand it.”
“I need to trust someone, so I trust her.”
“I wish I had mentoring every day.”
